Gauhati University organized Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav & Partition Horror Remembrance Day
GUWAHATI: Gauhati University (GU) organized Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Partition Horror Remembrance Day on Saturday and Sunday on the eve of 75 years of Independence.
A Prabhat Pheri programme was flagged off by GU Vice Chancellor Prof Pratap Jyoti Handique on Saturday, which was joined by students, NSS volunteers, faculty members, officers and employees to showcase a love and respect for the country.
As per direction from UGC, New Delhi, 'Partition Horror Remembrance Day' was also organized at the Phanidhar Datta Hall of Gauhati University followed by an exhibition on the topic. Dr HK Nath, Registrar, GU welcomed to all the guests and participants to the programme. Inaugurating the PHR Day program Prof PJ Handique said that the day has been envisaged to bring to light the agony, suffering and pain of millions of people who were the sufferers of Partition. It is to remind the country of the largest displacement of human population in the last century, which also claimed the lives of a large number of people. Attending as an invited speaker, retired professor of Gauhati University, Department of Assamese, Dipti Phukan Patgiri said that every citizen should feel the sufferings and sorrows of the people who sacrificed their lives for India's Independence.
Dr RK Kakati, DSW, Gauhati University, coordinated the programme which was attended by around150 members of the GU fraternity, stated a press release.
Kamrup (M) initiative: In a related development, on the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, a talk was organized by the Kamrup (M) district administration in which the keynote address was delivered by eminent historian Prof Sanjib Goswami. Prof Goswami spoke of the facets surrounding Partition and how indirect rule of colonialism worked as a cause of the same.
Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha delivered the welcome address in which he spoke about the need to chronicle and commemorate the affects of Partition for posterity. The talk was attended by officials, teachers, scholars and students from various colleges and universities.
Kamrup initiative: 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' also observed on Sunday in the Kamrup district. A programme was organized at the conference hall of Integrated Deputy Commissioner Office at Amingaon where the Guardian Minister of the district, Chandra Mohan Patowary was present. He highlighted the various issues relating to Partition.
