GUWAHATI: The Post Graduate Students' Union (PGSU) of Gauhati University (PGSU GU) has requested the University Grant Commission (UGC) to come with alternative methods for evaluation of end-semester exam papers at the earliest.

After the UGC released guidelines, PGSU GU has sent a memorandum to the UGC on Saturday and said that this is not the right time to conduct the exam.

The PGSU stated, "We the students of Gauhati University request you to grant permission to the Universities to use an alternative form of evaluation, considering the deterioration of the health crisis in India. A normal situation, free from the pandemic, is nowhere to be seen near".

Mentioning the problems and issues faced by the students the union stated, "More than 1,500 in-campus final year students are in boarding and several others live in private hostels, as paying guests and in rented apartments. More than 75% of our students are from different districts. In such a situation, how will it be possible for the students to travel with such a high risk? Now maintaining social distancing should be the top priority, the offline exams will instigate social gathering."

"The problem is not only confined to the GU campus but also to more than 350 colleges which are affiliated to Gauhati University", PGSU GU stated.

"The alternative like the online exam is not a good idea as many students don't have smartphones also many students don't have a good network in their houses," the union stated.
