Girl students to get bicycle, not scooty

GUWAHATI, May 27: Turning around the promise drafted in the party's vision document, the new Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya announced that the meritorious girl students who have excelled in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) results will be distributed bicycle instead of Scooty, breaking the earlier tradition. In 2017, during the tenure of the then Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, top 1,000 girl students were given scooters. Notably, even in the 2018 Budget speech, Sarma who is also the Finance Minister, further announced that in the current year, the number of the beneficiaries will be increased up to 5,000 for which he proclaimed an allocation of Rs 25 crore in the Budget.
