GUWAHATI: Planting trees is a positive action all can take to improve the environment, increase biodiversity and, reduce the human carbon footprint. The importance of trees on our environment for the sustenance of life cannot be stressed on enough. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Krishna Kanta Handique Government Sanskrit College in Jalukbari undertook a plantation drive, where teachers, students and staff participated in planting tree saplings.

A lecture was delivered on the topic ‘Importance of trees and environmental awareness’ (Brikhyar proujonita totha poribekh hosetona) by Assistant Professor (Literature Department) of the college Dr Neelakshi Devi. “World Environment Day is a positive day to celebrate plants, trees, birds and other wildlife. Being out in nature is proven to increase personal wellbeing, and we need to create more trees. As such, we should make it a point to plant at least one tree sapling on our birthdays as a thank you to nature. Also, instead of flower bouquets, we should gift plant seeds and saplings to our friends and relatives on their special occasions”, she said.
