GMC Collects Rs. 50,000 from Parlours and Salons as Fine in Guwahati

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has collected over Rs. 50,000 from Spas and Salons for running a business without a valid business licence in the last three days as part of its trade licence verification operation.

According to reports, five unisex parlours, two beauty parlours, and one bar-cum-restaurant were fined for operating without even a legal licence.

To combat unlawful operations in the city, the GMC released recommendations for spas, unisex parlours, and salons on November 13. It also made massage and treatment for people of the opposite sex illegal in the city.

The ruling came after many civil society organisations filed a protest about the city's parlours, unisex salons, and spas becoming more unlawful. The primary windows of parlours or salons must be visible, according to GMC requirements, and no salons may get an exclusive room or chamber within the parlour. Citizens have filed many complaints claiming misconduct in the city's spas and unisex parlours, according to the decree.

These were "deemed to be damaging to civic society," according to the corporation, which added that it was "duty-bound to respect public decency and the regulations that regulate a civic society." 

GMC commissioner Devashish Sharma told a local news media that the commission had obtained multiple complaints about unauthorised spas and parlours. "We are not attempting to morally police the city," he stated, "but numerous senior citizens and organisations have brought to our attention the proliferation of such enterprises in various regions of the city." 

Several personnel reportedly engaged in prostitution have been captured red-handed by police in Guwahati following raids in several spas and unisex salons. In the city, there are about 300 spas, unisex salons, and parlours. With the spike in the number of such facilities in recent years, there has apparently been a growth in the number of criminal operations in the city.
