GMC Inaction Alleged Over New Bus Stops

Guwahati: A controversy has arisen over the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) failure to re-locate 11 bus stops in the city as per a proposal submitted by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in November last year.

The RTA had sought construction of full-fledged new bus stops in areas such as Jalukbari, Adabari, Khanapara etc. However, no action has been forthcoming from the GMC so far.

According to RTA sources, the GMC's inaction is the result of lack of coordination within the civic body. However, the sources said, the proposal has been re-activated recently due to the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M), who is also the Chairman of the RTA.

The sources said that it will be much easier for the transport department officials to take action against errant city bus drivers if there are well-demarcated bus stops.
