Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), on Sunday secured a clean sweep in Assam's Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections.

The saffron party grabbed 58 out of the total 60 seats, with the BJP winning 52 wards while the AGP securing six.

Notably, AAP candidate Masuna Begum won ward number 42, while AJP nominee Hukum Chand Ali secured victory in ward number one defeating the BJP candidates.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Congress this time failed to open its account in the GMC elections.

Initially, both AAP and Congress didn't see any success, while the AGP, a BJP ally, was ahead in one ward.

The Elections were held on Friday after a gap of nine years for the 60 wards of GMC. However, the elections were conducted for 57 wards as three BJP candidates were elected uncontested.

The elections to the GMC recorded a 52.80 per cent turnout.

BJP's ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has fielded its candidates in seven wards as per its seat-sharing pact with the BJP.
