GMC Polls: Pijush Hazarika Slams AAP Leader Atishi For Placing Broom On 'Jaapi'

Guwahati: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena for placing a broom (Jharu) on a traditional Assamese hat (Jaapi) during a campaign for Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Election.

Slamming Arvind Kejriwal led AAP, Hazarika asked Marlena and her party members to kneel down and apologize before the people of Assam for insulting Jaapi and allegedly hurting people's sentiments.

"Jaapi, Xorai and Gamosa are the pride of Assam and symbols of our self-respect. We strongly condemned this act and warn AAP and its leader not to repeat this again in the future. This is for the first time that a leader committed has done this during an election rally,'' Hazarika said during a press conference on Thursday.

''Before visiting Assam, she should know our culture. Atishi and other AAP members must kneel down and apologize before the people of Assam," he added.

On the last day of campaigning i.e. on Wednesday 20 April, the AAP held a roadshow to gather support for the party candidates contesting in GMC polls.

The mass rally on Wednesday morning started from Sanaram Field in Guwahati's Bharalumukh area and ended in Ulubari crossing several municipal wards.

The rally was organized under the leadership of the national state-in-charge of Assam, Rajesh Sharma in association with state coordinator Bhaban Choudhury.

All AAP candidates contesting the upcoming civic polls took part in the rally from Bharalumukh to Ulubari.

AAP National Executive, National political affairs committee member, and Delhi MLA, Atishi Marlena also participated in the mass rally to garner support from the public for AAP candidates.
