GUWAHATI: Amid the ongoing crisis due to waterlogging in Guwahati, the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) has launched a toll-free helpline number for any assistance in case of waterlogging. On Wednesday 20 April, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation took to its social media accounts to inform the citizens of Guwahati regarding the toll-free number for help. The corporation has given the toll-free number as '08811007000' which will be available for the citizens to call for any aid that they need because of the water logging in their areas during rainy weather. The post by GMC reads, "To the Citizens of Guwahati: FOR ANY ASSISTANCE needed due to waterlogging during the rainy season, please call GMC toll-free helpline number: 08811007000." Earlier at the beginning of March this year, the GMC carried out a drive for the prevention of waterlogging in different areas across the metropolis. By that time authorities of GMC hired machinery to complete the work of water-logging prevention in three different phases. In the first phase, 5 rivers and streams including Bahini, Bharalu, Lakhimijan, Basistha and Mora Bharalu were cleaned. In the second phase of the drive, the GM took the initiative to clean drains in the city which often become the main cause of waterlogging in places of public movement. The main objective of the drive in March was to increase the water-holding capacity of the drains and also to improve the flow of water so that this can ultimately reduce the waterlogging time on the city roads and streets. However, despite the efforts by the concerned authority, the city has been facing water logging issues due to the continuous rainfall prevailing in the region since the past few weeks. In its concern over the matter, the GMC has now provided the aforementioned number to the residents of Guwahati for the assistance required in water logging in the rainy season.
