Gogoi seeks Modi’s  intervention to publish error-free draft NRC

GUWAHATI, June 5: In a letter sent to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, the former chief minister of the state Tarun Gogoi has requested the duo to intervene and see that all genuine Indian citizens are included in the final draft of NRC, which is scheduled to be published on June 30.

Gogoi, in his letter said that in the first draft NRC there were lot of anomalies and large numbers of genuine Indian citizens including member of legislature, prominent figures, journalists etc were left out. There is a great apprehension that a large number of genuine Indian citizens belonging to linguistic religious minority will be left out.

The apprehension arise mainly because the Government of Assam seeking more forces apprehending that there will be trouble after publication of final draft NRC.

“If the genuine Indian names are included in the final draft NRC, I don’t see any reason why there should be disturbance,” Gogoi said. There has been apprehension even those who have been found to be genuine Indian Citizens by Election Commission as their names appeared in the voter list of 2014 and 2016 Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections respectively and most of them who franchised of voting rights their names may not appear in final draft NRC, Gogoi observed.

Gogoi further stressed that these voter lists were prepared with the linkage of 1967 voters list. Since all the voters whose names are there in 2014, 2016 voter lists their names should automatically appear in final draft NRC.

“If genuine citizens are left out irrespective of caste, creed, language, religion there is bound to be great resentment. I therefore request you to kindly intervene and see that all genuine Indian citizens’ names are included in the final draft of NRC,” he added.
