GUWAHATI: The Northeast is a favourable route for smuggling contraband gold. While on the one hand police and enforcement agencies are alert and vigilant, gold smugglers, on the other hand, keep coming up with innovative ideas to conceal and smuggle gold.

Government Railway Police (GRP) today foiled a gold smuggling attempt and arrested one person. Md. Shafi, hailing from Kerala, was arrested from the Rajdhani Express in Guwahati Railway Station. He was carrying 600 gm gold from Dimapur and was on his way to Kerala. Interestingly, he had ground the gold into small pieces and made ladoos. He had concealed the ladoos in his undergarments. But he could not escape from the vigilant GRP personnel and was arrested. Recent gold seizures in the Northeast indicate a spurt in the smuggling of gold through the borders of Bangladesh and Myanmar into the north-eastern states.
