GUWAHATI: Durga Puja celebrations began with Maha Sasthi on Monday. Beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Durga were installed in pandals across the city as per traditional rituals.

Animal sacrifice is a part of Durga Puja celebration, especially in the eastern part of the country. Animal sacrifices will begin from Maha Saptami on Tuesday and end on Maha Navami. One buffalo will be offered for sacrifice on Maha Navami at the Ugratara Temple in the city. To avoid crowding due to the COVID pandemic, the temple management will not allow any more animal sacrifices.

Kamakhya Temple will witness the sacrifice of one bull on Maha Saptami, two buffaloes on Maha Astami and one buffalo on Maha Navami.
