Guwahati Crime Reports: 1014 Persons Arrested in 10 Months

GUWAHATI: Since January 2016 till October 2019, an unfortunate rise in crime has been observed in the city. The 20 police stations under Guwahati Police Commissionerate have had 382 registered cases in the year 2016, 367 cases in 2017, 455 in 2018 and 687 for ten months in 2019. The maximum number of theft cases are registered under Dispur police station which leaves much for speculation, as the area is one of the most highly monitored routes in the state.

As per crime reports, 586 Indian and one foreigner were arrested in 2016, 559 Indians arrested in 2017, 694 Indians arrested in 2018 and 1014 Indians and one Bangladeshi foreigner arrested in 2019.

Substance abuse has become a major cause of concern among the youths all over Assam and the alarming rate at which it is escalating has raised red flags. Drug addicts and peddlers have found ways to continue rampantly right under the noses of authorities in spite of the efforts put up to curb this addiction that is slowly destroying nations. In 2016, 10.12 kg heroin was seized, 5.67 kg seized in 2017, 7.04 kg seized in 2018 and 22.81 kg seized in 2019.

In 2016, 4366.76 kg Ganja was seized, 7125.50 kg seized in 2017, 10396.82 kg in 2018 and 7603.60 kg seized in 2019. Opium of 75.31 kg was seized in 2016, 30.11 kg seized in 2017, 10.40 kg seized in 2018 and 14.79 kg seized in 2019. 222639 bottles of cough syrup were seized in 2016, 147891 bottles seized in 2017, 125301 bottles seized in 2018 and 50977 bottles seized in 2019. 163818 Psychotropic tablets were seized in 2016, 168267 in 2017, 3081036 in 2018 and 1280718 tablets were seized in 2019.

147.60 kg of drug tablets were seized in 2016, 8.75 kg seized in 2017, 28.22 kg seized in 2018 and 51.76 kg seized in 2019. Moreover, 1 bigha 10 lucha of cannabis cultivation ground was destroyed in 2016 and 4.5 bigha of poppy cultivation ground was destroyed in 2018.
