Guwahati: GMC Asks Cinema Halls, Shopping Malls Not to Charge Parking Fees

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation, GMC has requested the Cinema Halls and Shopping Malls not to charge parking fees after receiving complaints from residents of Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation, GMC on Saturday 13 November has requested the cinema Halls and shopping Malls of Guwahati not to charge parking fees.

The authority has made the appeal after receiving numerous complaints from residents of Guwahati. All the Cinema Halls and Shopping Malls that come under the jurisdiction of Guwahati Municipal Corporation should not charge any money from people on parking vehicles said GMC.

Aditya Gogoi, Collector of Guwahati Municipal Corporation speaking to media said that GMC has been receiving many complaints of taking high parking fees from the people living in Guwahati. The complaints are against the cinema halls and shopping malls located in Guwahati city under GMC. As people are fed up with paying fees to park their vehicles, they had approached GMC for actions to be taken on this.

On following the complaints mentioned by collector Gogoi, Devashish Sharma the Commissioner of GMC made it clear that such businesses charging money from non-customers needed to take preliminary permission from the Corporation before going to take the parking fees. Parking vehicles by residents in the parking space of the cinema halls or shopping malls cannot charge money without permission from GMC.

GMC has not interfered in the matter of charging parking fees by halls and malls but it is now bound to intervene as there are many allegations that cinema halls and shopping malls are not just taking high parking fees from customers but also from outsiders on parking vehicles into the premises of cinema halls and shopping malls.

Gogoi added in his statement that it is another business that has emerged in the city without consent and permission from GMC. He clarified that the Public parking places come under the authority of GMC and it is GMC who can grant the permission through a process of tendering.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation concluded by saying that if the business of charging high parking fees from residents and outsiders continues a careful lookout will be initiated and strict actions will be taken against those who charge parking fees.
