Guwahati: In a horrifying incident reported from Guwahati's Uzanbazar on Saturday, a youth who was thrashed mercilessly by a gang of 3 men later succumbed to his injuries at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bhangagarh.

Nizamuddin Ali was reportedly heading to his rented house -- which he shared with his widowed sister -- when he was confronted by some men who asked him for money, purportedly to buy drugs. After refusing, Ali was beaten black and blue. The merciless thrashing which took place on September 12 left the youth in a comatose state, and he finally succumbed to his injures today.

The accused have been identified as Mani Das, Rupan Das, and Rajib Das -- all residents of the Mali Bagan in the Kharguli locality of Guwahati city.

The deceased man's sister informed police that her brother was beaten brutally after he got into an argument with drunkards, who were asking for money to buy drugs.

"My brother Nimazuddin has been murdered mercilessly. We are very poor people, and hence, we are yet to get justice., My son was also murdered in a similar fashion. My brother was my only solace in the world as I am a widow, and now he is gone too. These people killed him because my brother did not give them money to buy drugs, as they are drug addicts," the deceased's sister said.

Meanwhile, Guwahati police commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta has promised punitive action against the men who brutally thrashed Ali. "Very soon, the accused will be brought to book and we will take all the necessary steps to ensure justice. Investigations are on and as soon as we find the culprits, we will take action against them under the relevant provisions of the law."

Today, Ali's family members as well as some locals gheraoed the house of the accused persons. Police reached the spot and dispersed the crowd.
