Guwahati: Minor Fire Erupts in Maligaon Flyover, No Injuries Reported

GUWAHATI: At the Maligaon flyover in Guwahati, which is currently under construction, a small fire started. According to sources, the blaze broke out on a tarpaulin sheet on Friday morning when welding was being done.

Even if the fire isn't particularly huge, passing vehicles can see sparks and debris falling over them.

Few days back, on Monday, a second water pipeline rupture event occurred in Maligaon Flyover, Guwahati, Assam. According to reports, a large amount of water spilled onto the road underneath the flyover that was still being built next to the Jalukbari Police Station.

The Maligaon region already experiences traffic issues, so the event with the water line leak has the locals worried. Several families who were impacted by the tragedy in Kharghuli are still staying in the relief camp established by the district administration, and the victims have questioned the government's sincerity in its plans to restore their homes.

The All Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) sub-urban and long-distance buses arriving in Guwahati were instructed by the Kamrup Metropolitan District on June 1 to go through National Highway 37 via Lokhora, Garchuk, Beltola, or Khanapara in order to reach the Rupnagar depot and to refrain from using Maligaon route.

The order read, “Whereas the construction of flyover at Maligaon area is going on and the city is facing tremendous congestion in that area, so the buses of ASTC, coming from Sub-Urban & long distant places are to reach Rupnagar depot through National Highway-37 via Garchuk or Lokhora or Beltola or Khanapara to avoid undue congestion w.e.f 02,06.2023.”

It should be noted that since the flyover project began, residents of the Maligaon region have experienced severe traffic congestion, which has both impacted daily life in the neighbourhood and commercial operations.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that the flyover would be inaugurated during Bohag Bihu in April, but the construction couldn't be finished. So, it was eventually revealed that the flyover's opening had been postponed till Durga Puja. Now, though, it has been announced that it will be inaugurated in August.
