Guwahati Municipal Corporation Carries Out Drive Against Illegal Drawing of Water, 8 Pumps Seized

GUWAHATI: A team led by Manoranjan Bharali, Superintending Engineer, Water Works, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with other officials of Water Works, GMC in presence of Enforcement Branch, GMC led by Aditya Gogoi, ACS, Municipal Secretary & I/c Collector (Enforcement Branch) had carried out an inspection drive against the illegal drawing of water from GMC Pipeline using pumps.

The inspection drive was conducted at various locations viz Silpukhuri Nabagraha Road, Gandhibasti Byelane -7, Rajgarh Sankardev Path, Rajgarh main Road, Lachitnagar BT college Road, Guwahati in the morning today during the time of water supply.

At the time of inspection, 08 nos. of pumps of various capacities were seized which were found drawing water using unfair means.

Due to this illegal use of pumps, lots of hardships being faced by the general public since long back. This hampers the smooth flow of water supply and as a result, many consumers are deprived of receiving water despite having a water connection.

Further, the department urged all the citizens under GMC jurisdiction to stop continuing such types of illegal activities otherwise strict action shall be initiated as per GMC Act 1971. 

Earlier, in a bid to create cleanliness awareness among the denizens, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation(GMC) has released a theme song. A group of popular artists including Zubeen Garg and Dikhsu tune the song. The GMC authorities hoped that the song would also create environmental awareness among the people. GMC Commissioner Devashish Sarma appealed to the denizens to help and co-operate with the authorities to keep the city clean. He hoped that the GMC's theme song would help create awareness among the people.

"The theme song will be played on every GMC garbage collecting vehicle. We hope that the denizens would move out of their homes to hand over the garbage when they hear the music," he added.

In some cities in India, such arrangements have been already in place.
