Guwahati: Police begins investigation after attack on specially-abled doctor

Guwahati: A video has now gone viral that shows a differently-abled doctor from Guwahati, Manish, being violently confronted by a group of people, some of them presumed to be his patients.

The video of the incident, a 2:20 minutes-long clip, shows the doctor rolling in on a wheelchair. Thereafter, people are seen filing into the room and people soon surround the doctor as he continues to write something on a pad.

Things then become heated, with the doctor presumably getting into an argument with the crowd that has gheraoed him at this point. Following an exchange of words, a man in a white t-shirt kicks the table and another man in a blue t-shirt charges the doctor, making as if to attack him.

Although it is not known what led to the argument, the footage, captured in CCTV cam, has raised alarm bells, with many demanding justice for the Railway Hospital Maligaon doctor.

National Medicos Organization, Assam, condemning the incident, wrote on Twitter, "NMO condemns the attack on differently-abled doctor of Railway Hospital Maligaon Dr Manish and request the authority to investigate the matter."

The organization has also tagged various accounts -- including that of Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Hazarika and the Assam Police.

Assam's ADGP (Law and Order) G P Singh on Monday urged the Guwahati police to look into the incident after it came to his notice.

Guwahati Police, via its official Twitter handle, wrote back, "Noted sir."

This shocking video has surfaced at a time when the attacks on the doctors have risen to an all-time high in the country amid the raging pandemic.

Healthcare workers in India have reportedly been attacked or abused as they battle the coronavirus. As per reports in media, many of these 'corona warriors' have also been evicted by their respective landlords due to the stigma associated with the respiratory disease.
