Guwahati Railway Station Gets National Green Tribunal Certificate

GUWAHATI: Guwahati railway station became the first Railway Station in Indian Railways to carry out direction of National Green Tribunal for obtaining ISO 14001: 2015 Certification for “providing passenger Amenities in clean and green environment throughout the entire Railway station premises with High Class Reserve (VIP) Lounge, Waiting Rooms, AC and Non-AC Retiring Rooms, Refreshing Area, Food Courts and Sanitation”.

As per direction of National Green Tribunal, NF Railway had given consultancy contract for the environmental management system to M/s Caliber Management Solutions in February this year. M/s Caliber Management Solution is a consultancy firm based in Delhi and Guwahati which is the authorized associate of TNV certification. TNV Certification is the authorized certification body of International Accreditation Services (IAS) of the United States of America, who is the member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). While ISO makes standard and policy, IAF regulates and authorize certification bodies to issue the certificate after assessment to meet compliance as per related standard.

M/s Caliber Management Solution had started auditing the facilities at Guwahati Railway station from February 22, 2019, and completed the work on March 22, 2019. The report and certification were received on March 26, 2019.

ISO stands for “International Organization for Standardization” which is responsible for establishing the standard in the different area of activities. There are many types of ISO certification and ISO-14001 is for Environment Management System as per international norms and was upgraded last in 2015. Hence the certificate is called ISO 14001:2015.

According to a press release, the certification will be reviewed in 2020 and hence stricter environment norms regarding waste disposal, etc have to be adhered to by NF Railway in Guwahati station area. Provision of mechanized cleaning, anti-rodent treatment, use of standard cleaning chemicals, etc which are already in place will be monitored and audited by the certifying agencies which mean passengers will get cleaner station premises.
