Guwahati Refinery observes  World Environment Day

GUWAHATI, June 6: The Guwahati Refinery (GR) observed World Environment Day on June 5 with a number of activities aimed at generating mass awareness amongst employees and the public on minimizing the use of plastic products. This year the occasion was observed at the Refinery premises through a fortnight-long set of programmes that included various competitions organized amongst the employees, their family members, contractual workers, CISF members, and the students.

Befitting the occasion, a drawing competition was also organized for students from Class Nursery to Class X at Jubilee Hall, Sector-III. The programme witnessed an active participation with around 125 participants. An online quiz competition was organized for the employees of GR that was followed by a quiz competition for township ladies at GR L and D centre. A speech competition was also organized for the ladies at the same venue where an energetic participation of ladies was observed. At the speech competition, the participating ladies gave a glimpse on the daily use of plastic products in day-to-day life besides a number of new ideas being put forwarded by them on how to mitigate the issue of plastic pollution.

A programme on ‘Idea Presentation’ amongst employees was also on 30th May, 2018 at Mechanical Workshop Conference Hall on the topic “Beat Plastic Pollution” where main focus was put on alternatives of plastic use and mitigation of plastic pollution.

A tree plantation programme was carried out at Seuj Nagar Public Place, Choonsali Ferry Ghat in association with Seuj Nagar Unnayan Samity. At the programme, 50 nos. of saplings of different varieties like neem, bokul, devdaru etc. were planted along the ghat.

Apart from these, slogan competitions on the theme were also organized for employees, contractual workers, ladies and CISF members. A Walkathon named “WALK FOR PLASTIC FREE ENVIRONMENT” was organized under the aegis of Pollution Control Board, Assam and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati Refinery. The walk was organized from Pollution Control Board, Assam, and Bamunimaidam to Sector II Sports Complex which was followed by an Awareness Programme on “Beat plastic pollution” where the keynote speaker, Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami, enlightened the audience with the environmental impact of plastic pollution and the steps that one should take to control the menace.

During the prize distribution function at Jubilee Hall, Sector III, at the closing ceremony on World Environment Day 2018, a special E- Bulletin was released by Chief Guest Padma Shri Jadav Payeng.
