GUWAHATI: Guwahati Traffic Police has stepped up vigil on the roads. On Sunday night alone, Guwahati Traffic Police registered 290 cases of riding without helmet and seven cases of drunk driving.

It is mandatory for both the rider and the pillion to wear helmets. Following the 2019 amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, all pillion riders above the age of four must wear helmets and non-compliance will result in penalties.

The phase-I of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) under the City Police Commissionerate for traffic management and control from ITMS Control Room, Ulubari was launched in the city recently by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The primary goal of ITMS is to utilize information technology to modernize key functions of traffic management, traffic control, traffic law enforcement and traffic information dissemination in the city to build a safer city with smooth traffic flow, informed road users and by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of road traffic infrastructure. The ITMS will automatically identify a vehicle violating any traffic rules like jumping of signals, not wearing helmets, not wearing seat belts, using mobile phones while driving or riding, etc and will issue an e-challan immediately.
