GUWAHATI: The Students' Union Body of the Handique Girls' College here staged a sit-in demonstration at the college campus to protest against the move to re-appoint in the college an assistant professor of the BCA department Manas Gogoi, whose service had been earlier terminated over a year ago over allegations of molesting two students.

The protestors later submitted a letter to the principal and governing body of the college, demanding cancellation of the re-appointment process of the assistant professor.

The students' body stated in the letter: "He is an accused molester of two students in the said department of this college. There is considerable evidence against him due to which a student protest was organized against his misconduct in the college, his actions were critically highlighted by the media and he was eventually terminated from the college. Thus, to again bring him into this reputed institution would be betraying the very morals and values that it stands for, that is, the empowerment of women through education and culture. No student would feel safe if an accused molester is allowed to teach them and the very integrity of the authorities would be at question."

The students' body told the media that the governing body of the college has decided to re-appoint tainted teacher.

On the other hand, the college authority has said that while there is a recommendation from the governing body to re-appoint the assistant professor, no formal order to this effect has been issued so far.
