GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough, security forces apprehended a NSCN-IM area commander of Longding-Charaideo-Mon region. Based on specific information, a joint operation of Army, Assam Rifles and Assam Police was carried out yesterday, resulting in the arrest of self-styled major Anok Wangsa, area commander of NSCN-IM.
The operation was launched in the early hours of July 14 , which involved search of a designated area and laying of ambushes on suspected routes to intercept the movement of the cadre. At around 3:30 am, one of the teams intercepted a vehicle which was moving on the Namtola - Jampan area and immediately identified and apprehended the individual. Search of the vehicle yielded concealed weapons and ammunition.
The individual confirmed that he had hidden more weapons, ammunition and war like stores in his house located on the Assam - Nagaland border. The teams then carried out a detailed search of his house which resulted in recovery of large cache of arms, ammunition and war like stores including one AK-56 rifle, many pistols and more than Rs 5 lakh. The apprehended individual is the deputy of NSCN (IM) who is believed to be involved in the killing of MLA Tirong Aboh. The arrest of Anok Wangsa has been greatly welcomed by the locals of districts of Mon (Nagaland), Longding (Arunachal Pradesh) and Charaideo (Assam). (PIB)
