Hastily Covered Manholes Brewing Trouble In City

GUWAHATI: An area in GS Road, right in front of SB Deorah College has manholes that are covered by huge thick slabs that are far too big for the holes and are a cause of many mishaps. These hurdles in the path of walking spread for almost half a kilometre from Ulubari Higher Secondary School Playground to Ganeshguri.

The hasty remedy of covering manholes has proved to be more of a problem than a relief because of the strange way in which the slabs are placed. People have met with innumerable accidents as they stumble and hurt themselves. “I and my friends have walked this route for many months and even then, we often hurt ourselves in these out of place manhole covers”, a student of Ulubari Higher Secondary School said.

Students of SB Deorah college have also complained about the situation’ “Ever since we came to this college, we have witnessed innumerable accidents as people stumble and hurt themselves real bad. These slabs are not a solution but a complete menace.” People hurt themselves the most at night as they do not see the slabs and many injuries have been reported over the years.

A resident of the city commented, “We are about to become a Smart City. If this is the condition of the footpaths then I would definitely like to question, who is planning this city?”
