Higher Education Department Issues Guidelines

GUWAHATI: An order has been passed by the Higher Education Department for the security of the College and University students. A letter was recently forwarded in this regard to the Director of Higher Education Department Assam by the Joint Secretary of the Higher Education Department, where security guidelines were broached at length.

A request to set certain guidelines were proposed in the letter, to be followed by Universities and Colleges for avoiding any untoward incidents. Regarding the role of University authorities, installation of CCTV both inside and outside the vicinity of the campus has been deemed necessary and in case of nonadherence, private hostels will be dis-empaneled and proper action taken against them.

All private hostels must have boundary walls on all sides with CCTV at the entrance gate, common areas, and corridors. Alcohol and drugs should be completely banned and electronic entry and exit punching machine sending SMS to the parents should be installed.

Regular raids conducted by the Excise Department on shops to keep the menace of alcohol and drugs at bay has been initiated. And lastly, since a number of students in the universities come from tribal areas of the neighboring states, therefore it is the first duty of the universities to increase seat capacity of its own hostel so that maximum number of such students can be accommodated inside the campus.

These guidelines have been forwarded to the principals of all government and provincialized colleges of Assam, to be followed by the Universities and Colleges.
