GUWAHATI: All Assam Griha Rakshi Volunteer’s Welfare Association (AAGRVWA) staged demonstration at Dispur Last Gate, on the second day of the Budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

The main demand of the home guard body is job regularization. The protestors stated that it is ‘shameful’ that the home guards have to do odd jobs to run their families as they are only appointed for tenure of six months. After their tenure ends, they have to remove their uniform and find other jobs to earn their livelihood.

They body argued that the pay of the home guards are significantly less and it should be similar to a police constable. It demanded amendments in the Home Guard Act 1947. They stated that the physical efficiency test during every appointment should be stopped and instead refresher training should be introduced. The women home guard volunteers demanded that maternal leave along with other benefits should be allowed in the sector. Following the demonstration, AAGRVWA submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and appealed the government to meet their demands.
