GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led alliance government in Assam will complete its first year in office on May 10. Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia congratulated the government for completing one year and also expressed hope that this government would give good governance in the next four years.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati on Monday, Saikia said that the people of the State had brought the BJP-led alliance government to power in the State for the second term with high expectations. He hoped that the government would fulfil the aspirations of the people in the next four years. Saikia said, "The vision document of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised development for the State but this promise has not been fulfilled. Prices of essential commodities have sky-rocketed with LPG cylinders now costing more than Rs 1,000. In Assam, the inflation rate is 8.19 per cent, higher than the national average inflation rate of 6.95 per cent.

"The government failed to deliver on its poll promise of providing 1 lakh government jobs. It has also not been able to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six communities of Assam. Much needs to be done to improve the healthcare sector of the State as there is a shortage of health workers.

"The government has not hiked the amount under the Orunodoi scheme to Rs 3,000 per month as assured. Moreover, this scheme was supposed to cover 30 lakh beneficiaries but only 19 lakh beneficiaries have been covered so far.

"Assam continues to have a high crime rate. Cases have been registered against police officials.

"We hope that the Himanta-led government will work for the good of people and speed up the pace of development in the State."
