ICC organized Webinar on impact of coronavirus on textile industry

GUWAHATI: The Indian Chamber of Commerce organized a webinar on "The Impact of Corona Virus Outbreak on Handloom and Handicrafts of North East India and its revival strategy'', here on Saturday.

The objective of the seminar was:

• To assess the damage caused by the Corona Virus outbreak in the Handloom and Handicrafts of North East India.

• Revival strategy of the Handloom and Handicrafts sector's economy of the region.

• Ways and means to restore the broken supply chain of Handloom and Handicrafts products and enabling marketing of the produces.

• Survival strategy for the exporters.

• Financial Incentive requisite for the revival of the Sector.

The Webinar was moderated by Ishantor Sobhandit, Regional Director, Indian Chamber of Commerce-North- East Initiative.

The meeting was represented by panelists from Government of India and industry players from North-East India, including S Bandyopadhyay Director (East Zone) Weavers' Service Centre Guwahati DC (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, V. P. Thakur Regional Director (NER) Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles and Dr. Shailendra Chaudhari Managing Director North East Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd., Ministry of DoNER,

S. Bandopadhyaya highlighted about the plight of the craftsmen and weavers, who would be most affected by the pandemic. He emphasized on e-commerce platforms which can be utilized for the dispatch of products by the artisans and weavers.

Proprietor of DOYNA Arita Kashyap Bhowmick emphasized on use of local handloom products for domestic up gradation of the sector. She suggested not to be panicked about the situation and venture into panic buying. She advised the buyer's community to support the local producers by procuring from the local community. She also emphasized on the utilization of digital platforms to deliver products to customers at their doorsteps and similar efforts towards the same to deliver yarns to producers.

Dr Arnab Bannerjee, Asst Profesor, NIFT, Meghalaya, emphasized Govt interventions to support the nneds of the weaving community and the producers of Garments in the region.
