Idd-Ul-Zoha festival: Qurbani tactfully banned in Guwahati

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Representatives of various mosques, Muslim organizations and the community leaders of the city have alleged that the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration and the City Police have "tactfully" banned the "qurbani" (sacrifice) of cows for the coming Idd-Ul-Zoha festival on July 21.

The allegation came after a meeting between the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro Biswajit Pegu, senior city police officials and Muslim representatives held at the DC's office here on Thursday.

The general secretary of 'Noonmati Deeni Talimi Board', Mohd.Iquebal Ahmed said that animal sacrifice (Qurbani) is one the fundamental rituals performed by Muslims during Idd-Ul-Zoha.

The representatives of mosques and various other Muslim organizations have submitted a memorandum to the DC of Kamrup Metro and requested him to ensure that the ritual of animal sacrifice is performed during the coming Idd without creating any kind of disturbance in the society. Earlier, a similar memorandum was submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati.

"But during the Thursday's meeting, neither the DC nor the police officials gave us any clear cut instruction on transportation of cows and sacrificing the same during the Idd-Ul-Zoha. We had assured the administration and the police that all COVID-19 safety protocols would be adhered to while we perform the Idd ritual. But the officials did not give us any clear-cut guidelines and instructions. The meeting has disappointed us and the administration has tactfully banned 'qurbani' of cows. But we will follow the administration order and urge all Muslim citizens to maintain restraints to ensure peace and harmony during the Idd," Ahmed said.
