It’s official now: BJP & AGP to go it alone in panchayat polls

GUWAHATI: Putting an end to all speculations the ruling BJP and AGP on Monday decided to contest the next month’s Panchayat elections in the State without forging any type of pre-poll alliance.

The formal decision in this regard during a meeting between the Finance, PWD & Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, three general secretaries of AGP and two general secretaries of State BJP here on Monday. The representatives of both the ruling parties agreed to fight the ensuing rural polls with their own symbols during the meeting. AGP general secretary Birendra Prasad Baishya who attended the Monday’s meeting told reporters later that the decision of contesting the December’s poll independently was officially taken during the meeting. He said even though both BJP and AGP are part of the ruling alliance in the State, there will be no conflict of interest of both the parties if they go for the Panchayat polls independently. “There will be no conflict. But the Panchayat polls will be a competition for the BJP and AGP,” Baishya said.

Finance, PWD and Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Monday evening that even though the BJP’s State leadership was interested in having alliance with the AGP, the district committees of the party do not want to go for an alliance in the ensuing Panchayat polls. “The State leadership of BJP cannot impose its wishes on the district committees. So it is final that both the alliance partners will fight the polls on their own,” he said.

Sarma, however, said the BJP and Gana Shakti, a local political party will contest the polls together. “Candidates from Gana Shakti will contest the polls on the BJP’s symbol,” he said, adding that the BJP is in touch with the Tiwa Jatiya Aikya Mancha and Rabha Hasong Jauth Samity for a possible alliance.
