Jeevan Kite River Festival commences in Guwahati City

GUWAHATI: The Jeevan Kite River Festival, a river beach event organized by the Jeevan initiative on the bank of the Brahmaputra is all set for its 9th consecutive year. The three-day-long event kicked off on Friday that involves the aim of clean riverbank, including several other activities like kite flying, adventure sports, cultural shows and many other events.

It is to be noted that the festival is about to turn into an international kite festival this year, where tourists and international kitists from Thailand and America have already arrived in Guwahati. On every day the festival will begin at 11 am and continue till 9 pm which will also have cultural nights with eminent artistes, including Tarali Sarma, Rupam Bhuyan and many others.

Talking to The Sentinel founder of the festival Suresh Ranjan Goduka said that the main objective behind organizing the festival is to create a clean and creative riverside. Goduka said, "Organizing this event is an attempt to check out the possibility of creative utilization. This year we've taken the special theme of Assamese alphabet. By following the theme we've also installed some designs as décor. We can do a lot of things on riverbanks. This festival is an attempt to showcase a glimpse of the possibilities that riverbanks hold."

Besides kite flying, the 9th edition of the festival is a special one because of the platform it has provided for all kind of green initiatives. All the waste strewn at the riverbank will be reused, recycled or composted by the youth initiative -- The Midway Journey. The Midway Journey has taken the initiative of doing all the waste management. One of the volunteers Shrishendu Sekhar Das said, "The Midway Journey is the waste management partner of the Jeevan Kite River Festival. We've installed seven dustbin stations where we're collecting the segregated waste. We have also talked with the stalls and told them that only recyclable items will be allowed in the event. "
