Journalists Union of Assam (JUA) demands Internal Complaints Committee in media houses

Guwahati: With multiple cases of sexual harassment of women in media houses coming to light across the country, the Gender Council of Journalists Union of Assam (JUA) has demanded all media houses in Assam to expeditiously constitute the mandatory Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to deal with such cases.

JUA has been demanding such committees as per the Supreme Court directive, but sadly managements have paid little heed to it. With the whispering campaigns about sexual harassment by those in senior positions in news rooms having become a brutal reality, as the recent cases suggest, the JUA demands that the Ministries of Women and Child Welfare as well as Information & Broadcasting must take cognizance of the revelation in the media and take action against those managements which have not set up the ICC.

JUA Gender Council President Samim Sultana Ahmed and Secretary Sushmita Goswami urged upon the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, to ensure safety and dignity of women in workplace, particularly in the media houses of the state.

The JUA leadership salutes the women journalists who have chosen to come out and joined the #MeToo movement and extends its full support to them in their fight against sexual harassment and misuse of power by those in high positions in the media industry.
