Kamatapur Council After ST Status: Kooch-Rajbongshi National Convention (KRNC)

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Kooch-Rajbongshi National Convention (KRNC) has said that the State Government's move to create Kamatapur Autonomous Council would be a futile exercise if the community is not given the ST status first. It said such move will bring uncertainty to the long pending issue of according the ST status to Kooch-Rajbongshis.

"It is mentioned that the Autonomous Council will be formed with the undivided Goalpara district. When we talk of undivided Goalpara, we get only Bongaigaon and Dhubri district, because parts of Goalpara district are already included in the Rabha-Hasong Autonomous Council, while Kokrajhar and Chirang districts are under BTAD. So, the decision that the Cabinet has taken regarding the formation of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council will only cover two districts," Biswajit Rai, general secretary of KRNC in a press release stated on Friday.

Rai demanded exclusion Kooch-Rajbongshi villages from Rabha-Hasong Autonomous Council and BTAD. He also said the State Government must create Kamatapur Territorial Council under the Sixth Schedule stretching areas from Dhubri to Sonitpur.

The KRNC press release also appealed to the government to make it sure that the proposed Kamatpur Autonomous Council would be formed with a university, an Engineering College, a Medical College, a world class cultural centre, an unit of Sports Authority of India and swahid park. It also demanded setting up of Kamatapur Bhawan in Delhi and Guwahati.
