Kamrup (M) DC appeals locals of landslide-prone areas in Guwahati to vacate houses

Guwahati: Amid a rise in landslide incidents in Guwahati due to relentless rains, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu has appealed people living near the prone areas to vacate their houses.

Pegu said, "due to incessant rainfall for the last few days in Guwahati city, several incidents of landslides have occurred leading to loss of precious life and property."

He further added that there is every possibility of occurrence of more such landslide incidents in the coming days, considering the incessant rainfall in the district. "In view of the above, for the greater safety and security of the general public, the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup Metropolitan district hereby appeals to the residents residing in the landslide vulnerable areas of the district to vacate their houses and shift to safer places till the monsoon season is over for their own safety", Pegu said.

Moments earlier, the DC had directed the proprietor of the Barbara Clinic and Hospital in Kharguli to vacate the premises due to incidents of landslides near the Raj Bhawan located nearby. The hospital authorities of the hospital located in a landslide-prone zone are in the process of evacuating the patients and the staff.

Guwahati city is in the grip of rainfall owing to the unceasing rains in the Assam capital. Yesterday, a 62-year-old woman was killed in Kahilipara area after a massive landslide was triggered by the rains. 2 others were also injured in the incident, and were rushed to hospital. Earlier in June, more than 20 people including several minors were killed in several landslide incidents in Assam's Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts -- all in the Barak Valley.

At the same time, unrelenting rains have continued to lash Assam for days on end, increasing the number of flood-affected persons to over 2.5 lakh. At the same time, the river Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, Dhubri, Tezpur, the Burhiding at Chenimari, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, the Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing, the Puthimari at NG Road Crossing, the Pagladiya ay NH Road, Crossing, the Manas at NH Crossing, the Beki at Road Bridge, and the Sankosh at Golakhanj are flowing above their respective danger levels.
