MMCH to open for general patients in a week

GUWAHATI: The COVID situation has significantly improved in Kamrup Metro with 50 per cent drop in the number of active cases in the last 17 days.

While on May 31, as many as 384 positive cases were reported with 10 deaths, on June 16, a total of 158 new cases and three deaths were registered.

The breakdown of the cases in June — June 1 (403 new cases, 7 deaths), June 2 (383 positive cases, four deaths), June 3 (386 positive cases, five deaths), June 4 (421 positive cases, six deaths), June 5 (276 positive cases, five deaths), June 6 (309 positive cases, three deaths), June 7 (318 positive cases, two deaths), June 8 (341 positive cases, seven deaths), June 9 (430 positive cases, four deaths), June 10 (323 positive cases, three deaths), June 11 (341 positive cases, one death), June 12 (246 positive cases, three deaths), June 13 (226 positive cases, three deaths), June 14 (232 positive cases, three deaths), and June 15 (204 positive cases, two deaths).

From June 1 to June 16, as many as 4,997 positive cases were detected. A total of 61 people died from the dreaded virus during the period.

As on June 16, the total number of active cases in the district stands at 2,048. However, on May 31, the number of active cases was double with 4,823 cases.

Out of the current active cases — 984 persons are under home isolation, and 1,064 are in hospitals and COVID Care Centres (CCCs).

On June 16, as many as 274 patients were discharged from the hospitals and CCCs.

In view of the improving COVID situation, GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) principal Achyut Baishya said, "Due to decline in number of positive cases, the GMCH and MMCH (Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital) are having discussions to open the OPDs (outpatient departments). The number of COVID patients is decreasing at the MMCH. Out of the 220 beds, only 74 beds are occupied with COVID patients. Within one week, the MMCH will reopen for general patients. On the other hand, the GMCH is planning to open for general patients from July 1."

It is to be mentioned that, in May, the COVID situation in Kamrup Metro was grim with 32,784 positive cases and 533 deaths recorded during the month. May 11 registered the highest number of fatalities with 35 people succumbing to the virus.
