GUWAHATI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested one Raju Mallick from near the Guwahati Railway Station on Monday and rescued a youth named Govinda Ree, whom the former had kidnapped to collect ransom.

While kidnapper Mallick is a resident of Amoni under the Samaguri Police Station in the Nagaon district, victim Govinda Ree (18) is a resident of Paler Bon village under the Baskandi Police District of Cachar.

According to GRP sources, Mallick had kidnapped Ree on April 4 and demanded ransom by using the victim's mobile phone. Upon being alerted that the relevant mobile network tower was found to be near the Guwahati Railway Station, the GRP traced the criminal and rescued Ree in an unhurt condition.

Both Ree and Mallick were handed over to personnel of the Joypur Police Station of Cachar on Tuesday. The kidnapper is wanted there in connection with a case registered at the Lakhipur Police Station (No. 83/22 u/s 364 (a) of IPC).
