GUWAHATI: The 400th birth anniversary of Mahabir Lachit Barphukan was celebrated at the Guwahati campus of the Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV) recently by staging a drama along with recitation and discussion. The name of the drama was 'Mahabir Lachit' scripted by Prof Jagadish Patgiri, while the multidisciplinary discussion panel was moderated by Prof Sanjib Goswami.

The six-scene drama was recited by Mrinal Kumar Gogoi, Assistant Professor and after every scene the panel discussed various research themes that emerged from that scene. The panelists - Prof Jagadish Patgiri, Prof Sanjib Goswami, Dr Bimal Baisya, Dr Deepsikha Carpenter and Dr Ujjwal A Maske - delved deep into the main character of Lachit and discussions went far beyond the Battle of Saraighat.

A press release stated that this event in Assam's history was compared, contrasted and analyzed with the teachings of Gita, events of the Mahabharata, relations to Karma Yoga, Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, Shivaji, including comparisons with modern warfare and the Geneva Convention. Themes of unity, patriotism, nationalism, cultural nationalism, polyculturalism and leadership were focused. The drama's "Dexotkoi Mumai dangar nohoi" scene was even analyzed in relation to Shakespeare's 'Merchant of Venice', especially Shylock.

The programme was held at the MSSV auditorium where Prof Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor of the University; Ramen Deka, Vice Chairman of the State Innovation and Information Aayog (SITA); Dr Shekhar Kant Sarkar, Deputy Registrar (Admin); Gouri Prasad Sarmah, Assistant Public Relation Officer; and faculty members, students were present.
