GUWAHATI: “Legal Aid Clinic” means the facility established by the District Legal Services Authority to provide basic legal services to the needy person with the assistance of Para Legal Volunteers or Lawyers on the line of a primary health centre providing basic health services to the people in the locality. To fulfill the vision of access to provide justice for all, on May 18, 2019, a Legal Aid Clinic at JB Law College, Guwahati was inaugurated by Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Judge, Gauhati High Court in presence of Justice retd AH Saikia, Former Chief Justice of Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir and Chairman, Assam Human Rights Connnission, Vijoy Hansaria, Sr. advocate, Supreme Court of India and Member, National Legal Services Authority, Aparesh Chakraborty, District & Sessions Judge cum Chairman, District Legal Services Authority Kamrup (metro), Satya Nath Sarma, Member Secretary, Assam State Legal Services Authority and other distinguish dignitaries under the initiative of District Legal Services Authority, Kamrup (metro), Guwahati. In this connection, a discussion on the topic of ‘Importance of Legal Services Clinics for Law Students & Impact on Access to Justice for All” was also held in the auditorium of JB Law College which was attended by the faculty members and law students of different law colleges of Guwahati.

In the inaugural ceremony and discussion Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Judge, Gauhati High Court has stated that the main objective of setting up of Legal Aid Clinic is to attain the ideals of social, economic and political justice as enshrined in the constitution in the backdrop of poverty and inequality and to introduce the students to socio economic impediments to access to justice. Dr Justice (retd) AH Saikia, Former Chief Justice of Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir and Chairman, Assam Human Rights Commission in his speech hats stated that the main purpose of Legal Aid clinic is to familiarize law students to the problems faced by the masses ignorant about their rights and remedies under the law and to achieve the objective of NALSA namely “Access to Justine Tor All”. Vijoy Hansaria motivated the students to render quality legal services to the poor and marginalize section of the society as a part of their social responsibility. At the end Jyotshna Das, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Kamrup (metro) offered Vote of thanks to all the distinguish dignitaries and participants for their unstinted support and cooperation in achieving the motto of legal services and towards the District Legal Services Authority, Kamrup (M).
