Let Supreme Court judge probe Congress’ hand in anti-CAA protest vandalism, says APCC

GUWAHATI: APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora has raised the demand for an inquiry by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court into the police firing on peaceful protesters in Assam. He has also demanded another inquiry by a judge of the Supreme Court of India into the BJP’s allegation that the Congress has been involved in the vandalism during the democratic agitation against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Bill).

Addressing a press meet at Rajiv Bhawan here on Monday, Bora said, “The protest against the CAA was peaceful, but the police resorted to firing on the protesters. So we demand an inquiry into it by a judge of the Gauhati High Court. We’ve been agitating against the CAA and will continue to do so. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the leaders of the State BJP have been blaming it on the Congress for the vandalism during the protest against the CAA. We, therefore, demand the government to institute an inquiry with a Supreme Court judge to prove their allegation.”

Bora further said, “Only Congress leaders are being arrested for the vandalism in Assam. However, we know that the BJP is involved in derailing the democratic agitation.”

He said that the APCC is also going to move the Supreme Court of India against the CAA apart from the party at the national level. “If we make it to Dispur in 2021, we won’t allow the implementation of the CAA in the State,” he said.

Making the announcement of the series of agitation against the CAA, Bora said that on December 19 they are going to stage statewide sit-in demonstrations and a signature campaign against the Act from December 22 along with a padayatra throughout the State.
