Guwahati: The liquor sale in Guwahati on December 3st witnessed a massive jump as the city registered a liquor sale worth Rs 6 crore.

''On 31st December, though there were few people on road, the city witnessed liquor sale worth Rs 6 crore, including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL),'' said one of the city-based liquor distributors.

Notably, Guwahati achieved the distinction of registering not even a single accident on Friday night, a development which has come after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the public for restraint and issued instructions to the administration to take appropriate action to prevent mishaps which used to occur routinely as a result of revelry to mark New Year's Eve.

This information was shared with the media by Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati.

"This achievement has been made possible by the positive response and wholehearted cooperation given by the residents of Guwahati in response to the appeal made by the Chief Minister," Mahanta said.

The police had set up checkpoints at 55 areas of the city on Friday and detected 115 cases of drunken driving, which is negligible for the occasion, he said. He further revealed that a total of 52 vehicles were seized from drunk drivers and 63 driving licences were suspended.

However, 47 persons were intercepted for drunk driving and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and suspended their licenses. So far, 646 persons have been booked for drunk driving.

The decision was taken as part of a directive from the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a bid to curb road accidents. The public reportedly has also largely followed the CM's directives.

Notably, according to reports, alcohol worth Rs 5 crore was sold in the occasion of Diwali on November 4th and 5th in the city.

The IMFL worth Rs 5,01,32, 000 sold in Guwahati of which IMFL worth Rs 2,56,70,000 was sold on November 4 while alcohol worth Rs 2,44,62,000 was sold on November 5.
