Litterateur Prafulla Kotoky no more

GUWAHATI, June 5: Eminent educationist and litterateur Dr Prafulla Kotoky died on Tuesday in a city hospital following a short infirmity. The former head of the department of English, Gauhati University died at the age of 84. The late Kotoky was celebrated for his immense contribution made to the Assamese as well as English literature. He also occupied a distinguished place among the scholars in his discipline.

Dr Kotoky was born in 1934. He completed his post graduation from Gauhati University in 1958. After teaching couple of years at Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat Kotoky joined Gauhati University in 1964. He retired as head of the department of English in 1994.

Kotoky received the Sahitya Academy Award in 2005 for his translation of the book, Untouchable which was originally written by Banamali Goswami in English. Kotoky was credited with translations of a good numbers of internationally acclaimed and bestselling English books into Assamese.

CM condoles the demise

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the demise of noted educationist and litterateur Dr Prafulla Kotoki, who breathed his last today. In a statement, Chief Minister Sonowal underlined the immense contribution of Dr. Kotoki in the academic and literary fields of the state during his life and termed his death as an irreparable loss to the society. He also stated that the Sahitya Academi recipient enriched the Assamese literature with his original creations and translated works of world literature and added that as a professor of English literature in Gauhati University, Dr. Kotoki left indelible mark in the academic arena of the state.

The Chief Minister also conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
