Local Farmers’ Protest In Guwahati Enters 3rd Day

Staff Reporter

Guwahati: At a time when the people of Assam don’t want any intrusion from outside agencies, the Assam government has faced the ire of the indigenous people when it signed an agreement through Purabi Dairy with Gujarat-based NDDB, depriving the local farmers of their dues. As a result, on August 16, the Sitajakhala Dugdha Utpadak Samabai Samity threw away about 1,000 litres of milk into the Killing river in Jagiroad in protest against the State government’s alleged irregularities and syndicateraj in the Dairy sector.

The protest by the local farmers has entered third day on Sunday. The protest was started from Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Khetra at Jalukbari. The brand ambassador of ‘Sitajakhala’, Zubeen Garg, took active part in the rally to show his concern for the farming community. The protestors marched till Zubeen Garg’s house, distributing about 1,600 litres of milk to people on the way free of cost. The dairy farmers have demanded an immediate resolution of the issue as they think it would hamper the State’s economy.
