Lok Sabha Election: Delay Hits Indian National Congress (INC) Campaign

GUWAHATI: A difference of opinion in the Congress top brass is delaying the party to name its four candidates for the third phase of the Lok Sabha poll in Assam. Such a delay, according to sources, has put the party to the back foot in campaign, especially in Guwahati Parliamentary constituency.

The party may name its candidates for the third phase poll on Thursday or Friday. The third phase of the Lok Sabha poll in Assam slated for April 23 is in Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri and Kokrajhar. According to sources, a rift in the party leadership on the choice of candidates is delaying the selection process. Such a delay at a time when the BJP has started its campaign for party candidate Queen Ojha in the length and breadth of the constituency, according to sources, has put the Congress on the back foot insofar as campaign is concerned. The AGP has not also named its candidates for Dhubri and Barpeta Lok Sabha seats. According to sources, while the ticket for Dhubri seat is almost set to go to former MLA Javed Islam, the ticket for the Barpeta seat will go either to former Rajya Sabha MP Kumar Dipak Das or former MLA Bhupen Roy.
