GUWAHATI: People in Assam continue to bear the brunt of man-elephant conflicts. The Goalpara district is one of the most affected districts.
The district shares its border with Meghalaya from where elephant herds come to the Goalpara district and create havoc. The district has lost 116 human lives from 2017 to December 2022. The district suffered the highest loss of 25 human lives in 2021 in elephant attacks, followed by 23 in 2018. Elephants also damaged a large number of houses during the period.
Meanwhile, men and elephants lost lives in the Baksa district from 2018 to 2022. According to official statistics, 31 humans and 24 elephants lost their lives during the period in the district. The district experienced the highest number of eight deaths of humans in elephant attacks in 2019. The pachyderms also damaged many houses and standing crops.
The Forest Department erected 13 km of solar fencing in some areas to prevent elephant depredation. The work of 45 km of solar fencing is underway in the district.
