GUWAHATI: The Government Railway Police (GRP), which is responsible for railway passenger's safety and policing on railway stations and trains, is dealing with scarcity of manpower in the state. Nearly 250 posts in the state's GRP are lying vacant from the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to railway constables.

GRP sources said that three out of the five posts of DSP of railway police, 11 out of 36 posts of Sub Inspector (SI), 35 out of 85 posts of Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and 200 out of 857 posts of constable (both armed and unarmed branch) are lying unfilled. The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) CID is currently in-charge of the Government Railway Police, Assam which is an organization of Assam police. The state has 12 Government Railway Police Stations, 18 GRP Outposts, 11 patrol posts and 3 GRP Investigation Centres.

According to sources, the shortage of manpower has hampered the GRP from effectively discharging their duties as they remain overworked and understaffed. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the rate of crime recorded by the GRP in Assam in 2020 stands at 0.6 as against the all India figure of 2.2.
