Manual rickshaws no longer convenient in Guwahati streets

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The streets of Guwahati are already congested with enough city buses and rental cars, now the rickshaw pullers have caused new menace in some parts of the city. They have been restricted from plying on the main roads but this has been openly disregarded by the rickshaw pullers. This causes huge traffic jams and in some cases, even accidents.

Many local residents have expressed their frustration over the matter, especially in the areas of Six-mile, GS Road, Ganeshguri, Zoo Road and Chandmari. A resident of Zoo Road said, “This area already faces huge traffic and the unruly rickshaw pullers are a hazard on the road.” Some city dwellers have also chastised the rickshaw pullers for not following traffic rules and stopping rickshaws in the middle of the road, leading to a chaotic traffic situation. Amit Yadav, a resident of Six Mile informed, “During the peak hours, the rickshaw pullers are a huge risk to school going children. The way they ride, which is often in the wrong direction, has already caused one accident right before my eyes.”
