Martyrs' sacrifice will not go in vain: AGP (Asom Gana Parishad)

GUWAHATI: Regional party AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) observed the 'Martyrs Day' centrally at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra here on Friday. Mentionably, Khargeswar Talukdar be came the first martyr during the six year - long Assam Agitation against the influx of Bangladeshis into the State. The incident happened in Bhabanipur near Barpeta.

He became a martyr on December 10, 1979. Since that day, the pace of the agitation intensified across the state. Addressing the meeting held on the occasion, AGP president and Minister Atul Bora said that, "The sacrifice of the more than 855 martyrs will never go in vain. The Assam government is committed to implement all the clauses of the Assam Accord. That is why recently, the state government constituted a committee to recommend how to implement the Assam Accord fully. Already several meetings of the sub-committee have been convened."

He further pointed out, "The manner in which the Assam Agitation was carried out caught the attention of the world. "

During the function, AGP working president and Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "The AGP has a responsibility towards the family members of the martyrs and victims during the Assam Agitation. The government will try to resolve their problems."

On the occasion, the AGP also felicitated the family members of martyrs Khargeswar Talukdar and Naren Sarma.

MP Birendra Prasad Baishya, senior MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury, many senior party leaders and workers were present.
