GUWAHATI: Several leaders and members from multiple political parties and organizations joined the Congress party during an event organized at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Leaders from the Ganashakti Party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), United People’s Party Liberal, Goria Moria Desi Jatiya Parishad and Veer Lachit Sena Assam joined the party along with a large number of members in the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and in charge of APCC Jitendra Singh. President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Bhupen Bora, Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi, Pradyut Bordoloi, Leader of the Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) Debabrata Saikia, and several other leaders of the party attended this event.

Prabeen Boro, the former president of AASU and ex-general secretary of BPF; ex-minister Pranay Rabha; and Mahim Hazarika, working president of the Ganashaki Party, were among the more than 70 leaders joining the Congress during this event.

Speaking on the occasion, party president Bhupen Bora said that this is only the beginning and many more leaders as well as members of different parties will also join them soon, adding that similar events were organised in Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong, wherein multiple people have joined the party. He also said that although a large number of leaders are waiting to join the party, the APCC Political Affairs Committee will take the final call on the same.

Bhupen Bora also mentioned that the public has suffered a lot during the 8 years of the current government because of corruption and that the Congress party has voiced its concerns regarding the same both inside the Parliament and outside the same. He also mentioned that the public of Assam is keeping a strict vigil on the actions of the parties, and those who want to root out corruption and want the development of Assam as well as protect the Constitution of India will be supporting Congress.

Ahead of this joining ceremony, the leaders and members of the party paid their respects to the former chief minister of the state, Tarun Gogoi, on his 89th birth anniversary. The party members paid floral tributes while remembering the life and actions of the late leader of the Congress party.
