Minister Pijush Hazarika: Foreigners Tribunals issue notices following rules

GUWAHATI: On behalf of the Home Minister, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika informed the State Assembly that if FTs (Foreigners Tribunals) had harassed any Indian citizen in the name of detection of foreigners that was condemnable. He said that the government would take action against the officials.

The Minister said this in the discussion under Rule 301 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Assembly.

MLA Ajay Kumar Roy raised the issue that FTs were harassing Indians in the name of detecting foreigners.

Hazarika said, "Border Police or Electoral Registration Officer sends documents to the Border SP regarding people of doubtful nationalities. The SP gives his view and seeks opinions from the FTs that register cases under the Foreigners Act 1946 and Foreigners (Tribunal) Order, 1964 against the people concerned and issue notices to them asking them to prove their Indian citizenship. If the persons do not respond to the notices several times, the FTs issue notices to the last known place of residence of people after following all rules. The people of doubtful nationalities get repeated chances to prove their Indian nationalities. Issuing notices to people of suspected nationalities is a legal procedure. The question of violating rules or harassing anyone does not arise in it. If FTs have harassed anyone, they will face action."

Refuting the allegations that many people committed suicide after getting notices from FTs, the Minister said that the government had no such information.
