GUWAHATI: A provision has been added to The Motor Vehicles Act, 1998 for imposing an instant fine of up to Rs 2,000 on two-wheeler riders who wear their helmets improperly. The measure has been taken to lower the risks of two-wheeler accidents in the country.

If a rider is found wearing a helmet with the band or buckle untied while riding a motorcycle or scooter, then they will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. Further, helmets must have the Bureau of Indian Standards (BSl) certification. Two-wheeler riders will have to pay a penalty of Rs 1,000 if their helmets do not have BSI certification.

Further, if a rider violates other traffic rules such as jumping a red light, then they will pay a fine of Rs 2,000 even if they are wearing a helmet.
